  • O Fire Forever Revered : Shakti Chattopadhyay
translated from Bengali to English by Nandini Gupta

    O Fire Forever Revered
    (ও চিরপ্রণম্য অগ্নি)

    O fire forever revered
    Consume me.
Start with the feet, immobile, stilled.
    Burn these hands, sullied loveless.
    Now
Only the ice of flowers are trapped within the arms,
The shoulders are unburdened of obligations:
    Burn them.
    Only then approach life.
    Linger a moment,
    Before you destroy
    The mind numbed with
truth and lies, colours and whites.
    Preserve the two eyes
they may still want to see.
Ruin them only when the tears stop.
Flowers garlands wreaths rest in fragrant dishabille
    Do not burn them,
They bear the touch of loving hands.
Let them float down the Ganga
    Imperious, free.
    O fire forever revered
    Consume me.

The original poem 'O Chiropranamya Agni' (ও চিরপ্রণম্য অগ্নি) was included in the book with the same title published first during the Kolkata Book Fair in 1985 by Ananda Publishers (আনন্দ পাবলিশার্স).
