Professor new! - Rabindranath Tagore translated from Bengali to English by Carolyn B. Brown
    Rabindranath Tagore | Story | May 2024
Just then, shy and glowing, like a vine after a gentle rain, Kiran entered the room accompanied by Bamacharan-babu, the new professor at our college. There was nothing left for me to understand. That night I went home and burned the notebook that contained my writing. I went back to my village and got married.

I never wrote the great epic that I’d planned to write on the bank of the Ganges, but my life was the better for it.

Listening to Gitanjali: Parables for Translators - Carolyn B. Brown
    Rabindranath Tagore | Essay : ধারাবাহিক | November 2023
The very compactness of the poems in Bengali is a challenge: Could an English version possibly come close to their frugality, allowing only a few words within a line? The twelve translations from Gitanjali that accompany this essay are an experiment in minimalism, shaped as well by a second question: What if the translator were to insist on

The Haunted Mine - Sailajananda Mukhopadhyay translated from Bengali to English by Santanu Banerjee
    English | Story | July 2022
My quarter was not very close. I had to cross two or three slums to reach an orchard of mango and jackfruit trees and then take another path made of packed coal dust. A dilapidated house stood a little distance from where I had to turn right to pass under a neem tree and stroll a couple of minutes further to arrive at my door.
Tagore in Gora - Indranil Dasgupta translated from Bengali to English by Chhanda Chattopadhyay Bewtra
    Rabindranath Tagore | Essay | July 2022
Gora is not just a soap opera. For one thing, no one takes the trouble to present a significant idea in a soap opera. Much of what Tagore wanted to say through Gora is also seen in the story of his own life. Written by a great poet, Gora is not only exceptional for its outstanding use of language but also for a vitality and ambition which, like Tagore himself, is unparalleled in Bengali literature. An indefatigable

Rupnarayan - Narayan Gangopadhyay translated from Bengali to English by Chhanda Chattopadhyay Bewtra
    English | Story | March 2022
Meanwhile, Sunetra wondered why he shrank back instead of pulling her into his arms. Why hadn’t he embraced her hard and said, ‘now that we are facing our deaths, know this Sunetra, I’ll never let you go. I’ll hold on to you with all my strength.’? But neither could utter a single word. The oars pulled the boat steadily towards the shore.
Camouflage - Narayan Gangopadhyay translated from Bengali to English by Chhanda Chattopadhyay Bewtra
    English | Story | March 2022
“Oh, do tell us!" We chimed in a chorus. Teni-da resumed. “I used to have a dog. Not a bag of bones like your Indies. This one was a huge greyhound. His looks were as ferocious as his roars, and was he well trained! He could walk on his hind legs for hours on end. He died in an accident, poor thing. I still miss him, but he sacrificed his life for a brahmin, so he must have gone to straight to heaven.”
The Grey Manuscript - Jibanananda Das translated from Bemgali to English by Shambhobi Ghosh
    Jibanananda Das | Story | March 2022
In my choice of story, I have tried to pick one that best represents Jibanananda’s multi-faceted brilliance — a story that, while exploring the relationship of a married couple, astonishes the reader by presenting a profound existential question through a surreal portrayal of landscape.

Thirty-Eight Years with Shakti - Samir Sengupta translated from Bengali to English by Bhaswati Ghosh
    Shakti Chattopadhyay | Memoir | November 2020
I first met Shakti in 1957, at the College Street Coffee House. I still carried on me the smell of Ramakrishna Mission’s Vidyamandir from where I had just graduated. The modernity of Coffee House startled me almost every day. I would find myself a corner to sit at the Krittibas table, with the poets barely tolerating me. Scores of foreign names—of poets, novelists, films, filmmakers ...
