    When my steps no longer put their imprint
    Upon this meandering road,
    When I no longer row my boat
    Along this river bank,
    When I finish all my buying and selling
    And square off all credits and debts.
    And end my regular sauntering in,
    And out of this market place,
    Then you need not remember me,
    And looking up to the sky,
    You need not call out my name,
    Gazing at the stars.

    The strings of my tanpura
    Will then be coated in dust,
    Thorny shrubs will twine across,
    All doors of my solitary house.
    The flower garden will be dense grass
    And the flowers will go in exile,
    And moss will sprout all across
    The edges of the deep lake,
    Then you need not remember me,
    And looking up to the sky,
    You need not call out my name,
    Gazing at the stars.

    But the flute will still bring melody
    Upon this living stage,
    The days will roll along still,
    As they roll on these days,
    And from bank to bank, the ferry boat will ply,
    And still be filled as they are today,
    The cows will graze on this field,
    And the cowherd boy will play.
    Then you need not remember me,
    And looking up to the sky,
    You need not call out my name,
    Gazing at the stars.

    Who says that I am not there,
    Not there in that morning fair?
    I will play in all those games,
    It is I who will play those games.
    You will call me by a new name,
    And embrace me with new arms,
    I will come and go and come again,
    That old and forever me.
    Then you need not remember me,
    And looking up to the sky,
    You need not call out my name,
    Gazing at the stars.
