  • Even the two Bengals broke away : Shakti Chattopadhyay
translated from Bengali to English by Nandini Gupta

Even the two Bengals broke away
    (দুই বাংলাই রইলো না কাছাকাছি)

To cross from river to river I fear
What if an island outpost wakes near
    Saying, “Come, I’ve waited eternities.”

To cross from one hamlet to next, I fear
What if no stranger has ever been here
Therefore, “Stay. As we have, the same way stay.”

Even from our own lands we flee, go far
Who delves in empty chests to uncover
Old memories humming with honey bees!

Our spunk, and all else, are now gone afar
Who will hold us, close to heart, forever—
When even the two Bengals broke away!

The original poem 'Even the two Bengals parted ways' (দুই বাংলাই রইলো না কাছাকাছি) was included in the book Dhorme Achho Giraffe-o Achho (ধর্মে আছো, জিরাফেও আছো) published in October 1965 by Bikkhon Prakash Bhavan (বীক্ষণ প্রকাশ ভবন), Kolkata.
