New translations in Parabaas:
The Philosopher's Stone (পরশ পাথর)
'Parashuram', or Rajsekhar Basu's short story 'Parash Pathar' (পরশ পাথর) has been translated from original Bengali by Chhanda Chattopadhyay Bewtra. Based on this story, Satyajit Ray directed the movie also titled The Philosopher's Stone (পরশ পাথর) in 1958. Satyajit made another movie, The Holy Man (মহাপুরুষ) in 1965 as part of a double feature The Coward and the Holy Man, from another story by Parashuram which has been translated for Parabaas by Gopa Majumdar as Birinchi Baba in 2003.
Three stories from Tagore's Lipika (লিপিকা) have been translated by Palash Baran Pal into English: Repetition (পুনরাবৃত্তি), " The news from the frontier was not very inspiring. The king, with a heavy heart, went to the garden for a walk.
He saw a little boy and a little girl playing under a tree near the boundary wall.
The Jester (বিদূষক) "He was coming back from the temple after performing the rites, wearing crimson clothes, garlands of red hibiscus, and red sandal marks on his forehead. Only his minister and the court jester accompanied him."
and
The Horse (ঘোড়া) 'The four-headed Brahma twirled His four mustaches for a while and said, "Well, bring me whatever you have, let me see what I can do."
This time, when He created the new animal,...'
.
Atmavilap or Lament of Myself— Clinton B. Seely explores the possible connection between Michael Madhusudan Datta and American literature.
"Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin was first published in book form in 1852, some two years only before Michael Madhusudan Datta referenced it in his lecture... Whitman's "Song of Myself" came out in 1855, in his one and only book of poetry, revised a number of times, his Leaves of Grass. Michael's "Lament of Myself" was written and published in 1861, shortly after the publication of his magnum opus and great success, Meghanadavadha Kavya. The chronology was right for Michael to have seen..." .
Two poems of Shamsur Rahman, translated by Bhismadev Chakrabarti—
Asad's Shirt (আসাদের শার্ট), and Three Horses (তিনটি ঘোড়া),
Shakti Chattopadhyay Section:
Six more poems of Shakti Chattopadhyay, translated by Nandini Gupta—
Sorrowing for leaves (পাতার শোকে) ,
I could go. But why would I? (যেতে পারি, কিন্তু কেন যাবো?),
Slowly, steadily (ধীরে ধীরে যেভাবেই হোক),
Say, you love (বলো, ভালোবাসো),
Rain on Kolkata's chest (কলকাতার বুক পেতে বৃষ্টি),
and
